Cruise Control Inoperative
NOTE:
To avoid misdiagnosis, ensure preliminary inspection and all checks have been performed. See TROUBLE SHOOTING
.
- Place cruise control switch in OFF position. Disconnect cruise control module harness connector. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM connected to ground, measure voltage (backprobe) at cruise control module harness connector (harness side) terminal "F" (Brown wire). If battery voltage exists, go to step 3 . If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Repair poor connection or open in Brown wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "F" and instrument panel fuse block. After repairs, go to step 30 .
- Using DVOM, measure voltage between cruise control module harness connector (harness side) terminals "F" (Brown wire) and "E" (Black wire). If battery voltage exists, go to step 5 . If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Repair open in Black wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "E" and ground connection G103. After repairs, go to step 30 .
- Using DVOM connected to ground, measure voltage at multifunction lever harness connector C202, terminal A13 (Brown wire) located at base of steering column. If battery voltage exists, go to step 7 . If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Repair open in Brown wire between multifunction lever harness connector C202, terminal A13 and CRUISE CNTROL fuse (15-amp) located in instrument panel fuse block. After repairs, go to step 30 .
- Place cruise control switch in ON position. Using DVOM connected to ground, measure voltage at multifunction lever harness connector C202, terminal A12 (Gray wire). If battery voltage exists, go to step 9 . If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Check for a poor connection at multifunction lever harness connector C202. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 30 . If connection is okay, replace multifunction lever. See MULTIFUNCTION LEVER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Using DVOM connected to ground, measure voltage at cruise control module harness connector terminal "A" (Gray wire). If battery voltage exists, go to step 11 . If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Repair short to ground or open in Gray wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "A" and multifunction lever harness connector C202, terminal A12. After repairs, go to step 30 .
- Using DVOM connected to ground, measure voltage at multifunction lever harness connector C202, terminal A14 (Dark Blue wire). Press and hold SET switch. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step 8 .
- Using DVOM connected to ground, measure voltage at cruise control module harness connector terminal "B" (Dark Blue wire). Press and hold SET switch. If battery voltage exists, go to step 14 . If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Repair short to ground or open in Dark Blue wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "B" and multifunction lever harness connector C202, terminal A14. After repairs, go to step 30 .
- Using DVOM connected to ground, measure voltage at cruise control module harness connector terminal "G" (White wire). If more than 0.5 volt exists, go to next step. If 0.5 volt or less exists, go to step 16 .
- Repair short to voltage in White wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "G" and stoplight switch harness connector terminal "B". After repairs, go to step 30 .
- Using DVOM connected to ground, measure voltage at cruise control module harness connector terminal "D" (Purple wire). Press brake pedal, and then release. Reading should be 0.5 volt or less with brake pedal depressed and battery voltage with brake pedal released. If reading is as specified, go to step 22 . If reading is not as specified, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect ABS/TCC switch harness connector, located on brake pedal bracket. Turn ignition on. If battery voltage exists, go to step 19 . If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Repair short to ground or open in wire between instrument panel fuse block and ABS/TCC switch harness connector terminal "A". After repairs, go to step 30 .
- Turn ignition off. Connect fused jumper across ABS/TCC switch harness connector terminals. Using DVOM connected to ground, measure voltage at cruise control module harness connector terminal "D" (Purple wire). Turn ignition on. Battery voltage should exist with jumper connected between ABS/TCC switch harness connector terminals. Less than 0.5 volt should exist when jumper is removed. If reading is as specified, go to step 21 . If reading is not as specified, go to next step.
- Repair open, short to ground or short to voltage in circuit No. 420 (Purple wire) between cruise control module harness connector terminal "D", ABS/TCC switch harness connector terminal "B" and PCM harness connector C1 (terminal No. 36 on Aurora; terminal No. 30 on Riviera). After repairs, go to step 30 .
- Check ABS/TCC switch harness connector for poor connection. Repair as necessary. If connection is okay, replace ABS/TCC switch. See ABS/TCC SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to step 30 .
- Set parking brake. Raise drive wheels. Using DVOM connected to ground, measure voltage at cruise control module harness connector terminal "K" (Dark Green/White wire). Observe voltage reading while rotating drive wheels. If voltage varies as drive wheels are rotated, go to step 24 . If voltage reading does not vary while rotating drive wheels, go to next step.
- Repair open in Dark Green/White wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "K" and PCM harness connector C1, terminal No. 55 (Riviera) or PCM harness connector C2, terminal No. 25 (Aurora). After repairs, go to step 30 .
- Turn ignition off. Reconnect cruise control module harness connector. Disconnect PCM harness connector C1. Using DVOM connected to ground, measure voltage at PCM harness connector C1, Dark Green wire terminal No. 26 (Aurora) or terminal No. 72 (Riviera). Turn ignition on. If battery voltage exists, go to step 27 . If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Check for open or short to ground in Dark Green wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "H" and PCM harness connector C1, terminal No. 26 (Aurora) or terminal No. 72 (Riviera). If Dark Green wire circuit is okay, go to step 28 . If Dark Green wire circuit is open or shorted to ground, go to next step.
- Repair open or short to ground in Dark Green wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "H" and PCM harness connector C1, terminal No. 26 (Aurora) or terminal No. 72 (Riviera). After repairs, go to step 30 .
- Turn ignition off. Reconnect PCM harness connector C1. Disconnect cruise control module harness connector. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Select PCM, SPECIAL FUNCTIONS, ENGINE OUTPUT CONTROLS. Select CRUISE INHIBIT and command PCM to turn CRUISE INHIBIT off. Using DVOM connected to ground, measure voltage at cruise control module harness connector terminal "H" (Dark Green wire). Reading should be battery voltage with CRUISE INHIBIT off (NO), and less than 0.5 volt with CRUISE INHIBIT on (YES). If reading is as specified, go to step 29 . If reading is not as specified, go to next step.
- Check cruise control module harness connector for poor connection. Repair as necessary. If connection is okay, replace cruise control module. See CRUISE CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to step 30 .
- Diagnose PCM. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. After repairs, go to step 30 .
- Ensure any components removed or disconnected during diagnosis are reinstalled and/or reconnected. Repeat system check. See SYSTEM CHECK under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
