Scan Tool Will Not Communicate With Entertainment & Comfort (E & C) Serial Data Line: Testing

  1. Perform DATA LINK CONNECTOR (DLC) DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  . Go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Attempt to turn on radio. If radio turns on, go to next step. If radio does not turn on, go to step  10 .
  3. If scan tool is properly programmed to communicate with this vehicle, go to next step. If scan tool is not properly configured, go to step  11 .
  4. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC) of known good vehicle. Perform DATA LINK CONNECTOR (DLC) DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  . If scan tool communicates with known good vehicle, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with known good vehicle, go to step  11 .
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect radio connector. Disconnect CD player (if equipped). Using DVOM, measure resistance between DLC terminal No. 14 (Dark Green wire) and ground. See appropriate wiring diagram in DATA LINK CONNECTORS article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. If continuity is not present, go to next step. If resistance is indicated, go to step  12 .
  6. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using DVOM, measure voltage between DLC terminal No. 14 (Dark Green wire) and ground. If reading is less than 2 volts, go to next step. If reading is greater than 2 volts, go to step  13 .
  7. If vehicle is not equipped with automatic A/C-heater system, go to next step. If vehicle is equipped with automatic A/C-heater system, Using DVOM, measure resistance between DLC terminal No. 14 and CD player connector terminal No. 10 (Dark Green wire). If reading is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If reading is greater than 2 ohms, go to step  14 .
  8. Using DVOM, measure resistance between DLC terminal No. 14 and radio connector terminal E1 (Dark Green wire). If reading is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If reading is greater than 2 ohms, go to step  14 .
  9. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect radio and CD player connectors. Connect scan tool to DLC. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, attempt to establish communication with radio and CD player (if equipped). If scan tool communicates with radio and CD player, go to step  15 . If scan tool does not communicate with radio and CD player, go to next step.
  10. Repair radio as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16 .
  11. Verify operation of scan tool with scan tool manufactures specifications. After repairs, go to step  16 .
  12. Repair short to ground in Dark Green wire between DLC, radio and CD player (if equipped). After repairs, go to step  16 .
  13. Repair short to voltage in Dark Green wire between DLC, radio and CD player (if equipped). After repairs, go to step  16 .
  14. Repair poor connection or open in Dark Green wire between DLC, radio and CD player (if equipped). After repairs, go to step  16 .
  15. Symptom is not present at this time. Check for poor connections between DLC and scan tool. Repair as necessary and go to next step.
  16. Connect all disconnected components and connectors. After repairs, go to DATA LINK CONNECTOR (DLC) DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  .
