Brake Warning System Check

  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition on. Check for ABS DTCs related to brake system warning indicator operation. If any DTCs are stored, go to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect scan tool. Release parking brake. Turn ignition on, with engine off. BRAKE indicator should turn on for about 3 seconds, then go off. If BRAKE indicator does not operate as specified, go to BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR ALWAYS ON  or BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR INOPERATIVE  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  3. Ensure transmission is in Park. Start vehicle and allow to idle in PARK. Turn ignition off. BRAKE indicator should be off when ignition switch is in START position. If BRAKE indicator does not operate as specified, go to BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR ALWAYS ON  or BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR INOPERATIVE  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
  4. Turn ignition on. Depress parking brake pedal. Release parking brake. BRAKE indicator should only be on when parking brake pedal is applied. If BRAKE indicator does not operate as specified, go to BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR ALWAYS ON  or BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR INOPERATIVE  under SYMPTOM TESTS.
