Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing OBD system check, go to next step.
  2. Start and allow engine to operate at idle and stabilize for about one minute. Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature. Using scan tool, monitor HO2S heater current. If reading is 0.45-0.65 amps, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If reading is not 0.45-0.65 amps, go to next step.
  3. Check fuse for HO2S 1 ignition feed circuit. If fuse is open, go to step  11. If fuse is not open, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect HO2S 1. Connect a test light between chassis ground and HO2S 1 ignition feed circuit at HO2S 1 harness connector. Turn ignition on, with engine off. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  7.
  5. Connect test light between HO2S 1 ignition feed circuit and HO2S heater ground circuit at HO2S 1 harness connector. If test light illuminates, go to step  9. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM harness connector. Check resistance of HO2S heater control circuit between PCM harness connector and HO2S harness connector. If resistance is 0-5 ohms, go to step 12. If resistance is not 0-5 ohms, go to step  8.
  7. Repair open HO2S 1 ignition feed circuit. After repairs, go to step  14.
  8. Repair open/high resistance in HO2S heater control circuit. After repairs, go to step  14.
  9. Check for poor connection or terminal tension at HO2S 1 connector. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  14. If connection or terminal tension is okay, go to next step.
  10. Replace HO2S 1. After repairs, go to step  14.
  11. Locate and repair short to ground in HO2S 1 ignition feed circuit. Replace fuse. After repairs, go to step  14.
  12. Check for poor connection or terminal tension at PCM harness connector. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  14. If connection or terminal tension is okay, go to next step.
  13. Replace PCM. Program replacement PCM using required equipment. After repairs, go to next step.
  14. Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Allow engine idle to stabilize. Using scan tool, monitor HO2S heater current. If reading is 0.45-0.65 amps, go to next step. If reading is not 0.45-0.65 amps, go to step  2.
  15. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Review CAPTURE INFO, REVIEW INFO function. If any undiagnosed DTCs are displayed, go to applicable DTC test. If no undiagnosed DTCs are displayed, system is okay.
