Ignition Timing

  1. Turn lights and all accessories off. Position transmission in Neutral. Run engine at idle speed until normal operating temperature is reached. Stop engine and connect tachometer and timing light. On 1.4L and 1.6L engines with A/C, remove A/C belt.

  2. Start engine and run at curb idle speed. On 1.4L 4-speed Man. Trans. models, disconnect White striped hose from distributor. On 2.0L 5-speed Man. Trans. Federal models, disconnect vacuum hoses from distributor and temporarily seal ends of hoses.
  3. On all models, adjust ignition timing by loosening distributor hold down nut and rotating distributor.

(1) Set Federal 5-Speed. Man. Trans. to 5 @ 700.
