Steering Column - Non-Tilt: Overhaul: Disassembly: Notes
On all models, remove trim shrouds and covers. Remove all column mounted switches and lock cylinder mechanism. Proceed to the STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article.
- Detach wires and wire retainers. Remove shift lever. Remove breakaway capsules. Secure steering column in a vise by clamping at the column bracket. Remove turn signal cover. Remove washer/wiper switch. Detach stalk sleeve. Rotate stalk shaft full clockwise and remove.
- Remove turn signal/flasher switch. Remove retaining screw and ignition switch. Remove 4 bearing housing-to-lock housing screws. Prevent steering shaft from sliding out of jacket and remove snap ring. Remove bearing housing. Remove lock plate and spring from steering shaft.
- Remove shaft through lower end of column. Remove ignition key. Remove buzzer/chime switch. Remove 2 ignition switch mounting screws. Remove ignition switch by rotating 90 degrees. Disengage from ignition switch actuator rod. Remove dimmer switch. Remove bellcrank mounting screws and remove bellcrank.
- Remove lock lever and spring assembly with 2 small screwdrivers. Remove 4 lock housing-to-column jacket hex screws. Remove housing and plate. Loosen shift tube set screw in shift housing. Remove shift tube through lower end of jacket. Remove floor plate and grommet from jacket.
- If necessary to disassemble steering shaft pot coupling, pry cover tangs out from coupling body and lift seal and cover from body. Drive small short dowel pin at edge of coupling body down into coupling and discard. Pull body off shaft and shoe assembly.
