Purge Solenoid
The purge solenoid is controlled by the SMEC. When engine temperature is less than 145°F (61°C), the SMEC grounds the purge solenoid and energizes it. This closes the solenoid valve, preventing vacuum from reaching the charcoal canister valve.
When this temperature is reached, the SMEC breaks the ground circuit, allowing vacuum to reach the canister purge valve so that fuel vapors may be purged from the canister.
