No Start Test No 4 - Checking Engine Timing

  1. Connect a timing light to engine. Watch timing marks while engine is being cranked. If timing mark is between 0-16 degrees, remove distributor cap and crank engine to ensure rotor is turning and indexed correctly. Check compression and valve timing. If timing is not between 0-16 degrees, go to next step.
  2. With timing light, set ignition timing to 10 degrees BTDC during cranking. If engine starts, ensure ignition timing is set to specifications. If engine does not start, remove distributor cap and ensure rotor is turning and indexed correctly. Check compression and valve timing.
