Upper Control Arm: Installation

  1. Install upper control arm in frame rail brackets.
    NOTE: When upper control arm cam bolts are installed, tighten them only to 13 N.m (10 ft. lbs.) at this time. The cam bolts must not be fully tightened until full weight of vehicle is supported by suspension.
  2. Install cam bolts and nut/washer assemblies. When cam bolts are installed, cam must be positioned inboard facing rocker arm/push rod. See Fig 4 . Lobe on both cam bolts should be pointing upward when installed in slot of frame bracket. Install stud of upper ball joint in steering knuckle.
    CAUTION: To ensure stud of ball joint is pulled as far as possible into steering knuckle, original style nut and washer must be installed. See Fig 3 .
  3. Install nut and washer on stud of upper ball joint. Tighten upper ball joint to steering knuckle nut to 129 N.m (95 ft. lbs.). Install wheel and tire. Tighten wheel mounting stud nuts in proper sequence until all nuts are torqued to half specification. Then repeat tightening sequence to full specified torque of 122 N.m (90 ft. lbs.).
  4. Install bolt and nut mounting push rod to lower control arm. Bolt must be installed so nut is toward front of vehicle. DO NOT tighten at this time, full weight of vehicle must be supported by suspension when this bolt is tightened. Install stabilizer bar attaching link and mounting bolt on rocker arm. Install nut on mounting bolt. DO NOT tighten at this time. Install shock absorber in frame crossmember.
    CAUTION: When installing shock absorber into rocker arm, care must be used so upper bushing on shock absorber and/or rocker arm is not damaged.
  5. Install shock absorber in rocker arm. Bushing can be installed easiest by first carefully starting front and back edge of bushing into rocker arm and then lightly tapping it into rocker arm using a soft facedhammer. Install shock absorber to rocker arm mounting bolt. Tighten bolt to 163 N.m (120 ft. lbs.). Tighten stabilizer bar attaching link to rocker arm mounting bolt to 61 N.m (45 ft. lbs.).
  6. Raise vehicle on jack stands or on a frame contact type hoist. Install bolt and flag nut, mounting removed shock absorber to frame crossmember. See Figure . DO NOT tighten at this time, full weight of vehicle must be supported by suspension when this bolt is tightened. Install wiring harness routing clip on frame crossmember. See Figure . Fasten clips attaching front fascia to front valance panel. See Fig 1 . Install grill. Install and securely tighten 4 screws mounting grill to front structure. See Figure .
    NOTE: When jouncing vehicle, vehicle must be released at bottom of jounce cycle. This will ensure vehicle's suspension will raise vehicle to correct curb height at top of jounce cycle.
  7. Place vehicle on an alignment rack so full weight of vehicle is supported by suspension. Correctly jounce vehicle to obtain correct curb height. Tighten mounting bolt for push rod to lower control arm bushing attachment to 163 N.m (120 ft. lbs.). Tighten both shock absorber lower mounting bolts to 163 N.m (120 ft. lbs.). Perform a full four wheel alignment on vehicle.
    NOTE: When tightening upper control arm cam bolts using Adapter (Special Tool 8106), mechanical advantage of a torque wrench is increased by a factor of 1.5-to-1. For this reason actual torque wrench reading or setting will be lower then torque specification Example: If torque specified is 108 N.m (80 ft. lbs.) torque wrench reading or setting should be 72 N.m (53 ft. lbs.).
  8. After caster and camber has been set to preferred specification, and vehicle is at correct curb height tighten upper control arm cam bolt nuts to 108 N.m (80 ft. lbs.). Tighten and torque upper control arm front and rear cam bolt nuts using Torque Wrench Adapter, Special Tool 8106. See Fig 5 and Fig 6 .
