Fuel Pump Flow Test

  1. Disconnect fuel line between fuel pump and filter. Place end of fuel line in measuring container.
  2. On V8 engine, run at idle until 1 pint (1/2 L) of fuel is pumped. One pint (1/2 L) should be pumped in 30 seconds or less. If flow is below normal, check fuel line for restriction. Replace fuel pump if there are no restrictions.
  3. On V6 engine, turn ignition switch to "RUN" position. Pump should supply 1/2 pint (1/5 L) in 15 seconds. If not, disconnect inlet hose at pump and connect a vacuum gauge.
  4. Turn ignition switch to "RUN" position. Vacuum must be 5.3 in. Hg. If less, replace pump. If more, check fuel lines for splits, leaks, or kinks.
