Detonation Or Spark Knock

If engine exhibits a mild or severe ping, which is usually worse under acceleration, check the following:

• Check coolant level.
• Check water pump drive belt.
• Check air flow to radiator.
• Check coolant flow through radiator.
• Check thermostat.
• Ensure cooling fan operation is correct.
• Ensure coolant temperature sensor signal is correct.
• Check fuel quality (octane rating).
• Ensure Mem-Cal is correct for vehicle application.
• Ensure spark plug heat range is correct.
• Ensure ignition timing is correct.
• Ensure fuel pressure is correct.
• Ensure EGR system operation is correct.
• Check transmission for correct shift points.
• Check for excessive oil entering the combustion chambers.
• Remove excessive carbon from combustion chamber with top end cleaner.
• Ensure correct engine components are installed (camshaft, head, pistons etc).
