Manifold Air Temperature (MAT) Sensor (2.0L)

The MAT sensor, mounted in air cleaner, measures inlet air temperature. The ECM uses this signal to adjust fuel mixture and ignition timing.

The ECM supplies a 5-volt signal to the MAT sensor through a resistor in the ECM. The voltage will be high when the air is cold and low when the air is hot.

Low inlet air temperature produces a high sensor resistance of approximately 100k ohms at -40°F (-40°C). Resistance drops to approximately 70 ohms as temperature rises to 266°F (130°C).
