Check Gauges Indicator

  1. Start engine while observing CHECK GAUGES indicator. If indicator illuminates briefly and then goes out, go to next step. If indicator remains on, go to step 3). If indicator does not illuminate at all, replace indicator bulb and cycle ignition off and then on. If indicator does not come on, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  2. Check charging system, coolant temperature and oil pressure gauges for problem. If a problem is indicated in a gauge and CHECK GAUGES indicator does not come on, check for faulty gauge. See appropriate gauge testing procedure.
  3. With engine at idle, measure voltage across battery. If voltage is not 11.2-16.5 volts, repair charging system. See appropriate ALTERNATORS article in the ELECTRICAL Section. If voltage is 11.2-16.5 volts, go to next step.
  4. Enter self-diagnostics. See G - V6 ECM/PCM TESTS W/CODES article see G - V8 ECM/PCM TESTS W/CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section. Check for any trouble codes regarding charging system, oil pressure or coolant temperature system, and repair as necessary.
  5. If no trouble codes are present, ensure coolant temperature is less than 252°F (122°C) for 3.4L V6 or less than 244°F (118°C) for 5.7L V8. Ensure oil pressure is greater than 8.3 psi (.58 kg/cm2 ) with engine on. If oil pressure is less than 3-5 psi (.21-.35 kg/cm2 ), CHECK GAGES indicator should come on.
  6. Repair any problems found. If no problems are found, check for open circuit or poor connection in Red wire between instrument cluster connector and generator. If wire and connections are okay, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
