Description & Operation
Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system is designed to supplement protection provided by driver-side and passenger-side seat belts. A frontal collision of sufficient force will deploy driver-side and passenger-side air bag modules. Steering column and knee bolsters also absorb collision energy. SDM maintains a 23 Volt Loop Reserve (VLR) to deploy air bag modules for up to one minute after loss of battery voltage.
SIR system consists of Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM), driver-side and passenger-side single stage or dual stage air bag modules, passenger-side air bag module disable switch, front end discriminating sensor, also known as Electronic Frontal Sensor (EFS), driver and passenger front Seat Position Sensors (SPS), Passenger Presence System (PPS), SIR coil assembly and AIR BAG warning light.
