Remote Keyless Entry Diagnostic System Check

NOTE: The presence of DTCs which begin with "U" indicate some other module on class 2 serial data line is not communicating.

A Remote Keyless Door Lock Receiver (RCDLR) module was added midyear. The first step in diagnosing Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) problems on this vehicle is to determine which system this vehicle is equipped with. To determine which RKE system this vehicle has, open the trunk and inspect under the package shelf for the mounting tabs to a RCDLR module. The RCDLR module is between the package shelf and the package shelf trim pad. If there is not a RCDLR module, this vehicle has RKE functions internal to the Body Control Module (BCM).

  1. If vehicle is equipped with Remote Keyless Door Lock Receiver (RCDLR) module, go to next step. If vehicle is not equipped with a RCDLR module, go to step  8 .
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under left side of instrument panel. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, go to TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Attempt to establish communication with RCDLR module and BCM. If scan tool communicates with RCDLR module and BCM, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with RCDLR module and BCM, go to TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  4. Using scan tool, select DISPLAY DTCS function and retrieve any RCDLR or BCM DTCs. If scan tool displays any DTCs, go to next step. If scan tool does not display DTCs, repair remote keyless entry system by symptom. See appropriate REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEMS article.
  5. If scan tool does not display any DTCs which begin with a "U", go to next step. If scan tool displays any DTCs which begin with a "U", go to TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  6. If scan tool does not display DTCs B1000 or B1001, go to next step. If scan tool displays DTCs B1000 or B1001, perform appropriate test. See DTC B1000: BODY CONTROL MODULE MALFUNCTION  or DTC B1001: OPTION CONFIGURATION ERROR  under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS.
  7. If scan tool displays DTCs B1327 or B1328, perform appropriate test. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTERS & CHARGING SYSTEMS. If scan tool does not display DTCs B1327 or B1328, repair remote keyless entry system by symptom. See appropriate REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEMS article.
  8. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under left side of instrument panel. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, go to TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  9. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool attempt to communicate with BCM. If scan tool communicates with BCM, go to next step. If scan does not communicate with scan tool, go to TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  10. Using scan tool, select DISPLAY DTCS function and retrieve any BCM DTCs. If scan tool displays any DTCs, go to next step. If scan tool does not display any DTCs, repair remote keyless entry system by symptom. See appropriate REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEMS article.
  12. If does not display DTCs B1000 or B1001, go to next step. If scan tool displays DTCs B1000 or B1001, perform appropriate test. See DTC B1000: BODY CONTROL MODULE MALFUNCTION  or DTC B1001: OPTION CONFIGURATION ERROR  under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS.
