Test C: Cruise Control Inoperative/Malfunctioning (Without Electronic Throttle Control) (Using Cruise Control Tester): Testing
- If diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform CRUISE CONTROL DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect cruise control module 10-pin harness connector. Cruise control module is located on left front frame rail, behind bumper. Connect Cruise Control Tester (J42958) between cruise control module harness connector terminal "A" (Gray wire) and cruise control module (component side). See Figure. Turn cruise control switch to OFF position. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If cruise control tester IGNITION LED illuminates, go to next step. If cruise control tester IGNITION LED does not illuminate, go to step 20.
- If cruise control tester BRAKE/TCC LED is illuminated, go to next step. If cruise control tester BRAKE/TCC LED is not illuminated, go to step 22.
- If cruise control tester BRAKE LIGHTS LED is not illuminated, go to next step. If cruise control tester BRAKE LIGHTS LED is illuminated, go to step 23.
- Press and release brake pedal. If equipped with manual transmission, press and release clutch pedal. If cruise control tester BRAKE/TCC LED turn OFF with each action, go to next step. If cruise control tester BRAKE/TCC LED does not turn OFF with each action, go to step 25.
- Turn cruise control switch to ON position. If cruise control tester ON/OFF and INHIBIT/ENABLE LED illuminate, go to next step. If cruise control tester ON/OFF and INHIBIT/ENABLE LED does not illuminate, go to step 27.
- If cruise control tester CRUISE LAMP LED illuminates, go to next step. If cruise control tester CRUISE LAMP LED does not illuminate, go to step 28.
- Press and release SET (Set/Coast) button on multifunction switch, while observing cruise control tester. Cruise control tester should illuminate when SET button is pressed, and turn off when SET button is released. If SET/COAST LED illuminates as specified, go to next step. If SET/COAST LED does not illuminate as specified, go to step 30.
- Press and release R/A (Resume/Accelerate) button on multifunction switch, while observing cruise control tester. Cruise control tester should illuminate when R/A button is pressed, and turn off when R/A button is released. If RESUME/ACC LED illuminates as specified, go to next step. If RESUME/ACC LED does not illuminate as specified, go to step 31.
- Using cruise control tester, press and release INHIBIT OVERRIDE, then BRAKE and SET button. If CRUISE ENGAGED LED illuminates after SET button was pressed and released, go to next step. If CRUISE ENGAGED LED does not illuminate after SET button was pressed and released, go to step 20.
- Press and release R/A button on cruise control tester for 5 seconds, while observing throttle lever on throttle body. Throttle lever should move to wide open when R/A button is pressed on cruise control tester, and return to half throttle when R/A button is released. If throttle movement is as specified, go to next step. If throttle movement is not as specified, go to step 35.
- Press and release SET button on cruise control tester for 5 seconds, while observing throttle lever on throttle body. Throttle lever should move to closed throttle when SET button is pressed on cruise control tester, and return to half throttle when SET button is released. If throttle movement is as specified, go to next step. If throttle movement is not as specified, go to step 35.
- Tap R/A button 3 times on cruise control tester, then press and release BRAKE button. CRUISE ENGAGE LED on Cruise Control Tester (J42958) should turn off and throttle lever returns to closed position. If CRUISE ENGAGE LED and throttle lever are as specified, go to next step. If CRUISE ENGAGE LED and throttle lever are not as specified, go to step 35.
- Raise and support vehicle. Block one drive wheel. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Place gearshift selector in Drive position, for automatic transmissions (Neutral position for manual transmissions). Observe VSS LED on cruise control tester, while turning non-blocked drive wheel by hand. Place gearshift selector in Park position. VSS LED on cruise control tester should flash while drive wheel is being turned. If VSS LED is as specified, go to next step. If VSS LED is not as specified, go to step 33.
- Inspect cruise control module harness connector. If a Dark Green wire is connected to cruise control module harness connector terminal "H", go to next step. If no wire is connected to cruise control module harness connector terminal "H", go to step 19.
- Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. Using scan tool, select SPECIAL FUNCTIONS, then OUTPUT CONTROL for cruise control inhibit. Enable cruise control by using scan tool, and observe INHIBIT ENABLE LED on cruise control tester. INHIBIT ENABLE LED on cruise control tester should dim when scan tool enabled cruise control. If INHIBIT ENABLE LED is as specified, go to next step. If INHIBIT ENABLE LED is not as specified, go to step 32.
- Ensure scan tool is still connected to DLC. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect cruise control tester from cruise control module harness connector. Connect cruise control module harness connector. Test drive vehicle over 25 MPH, and engage cruise control. Using scan tool, monitor cruise inhibit status. If scan tool displays enabled 25 MPH or more, go to next step. If scan tool does not display enabled 25 MPH or more, perform powertrain control module diagnostic system check. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- If cruise control operates properly in previous step, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If cruise control does not operate properly in previous step, go to step 35.
- Connect all harness connectors. Test drive vehicle, and operate cruise control. If cruise control operates properly, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If cruise control does not operate properly, go to step 35.
- Inspect Pink wire for an open, high resistance or short to ground between bottom underhood fuse block and cruise control module harness connector terminal "F". If an open, high resistance or short to ground is not found, go to next step. If an open, high resistance or short to ground is found, repair Pink wire as necessary. After repair go to step 39.
- Inspect Black wire for a high resistance or open between ground and cruise control module harness connector terminal "E". Ground point is located on left front frame rail. If a high resistance or open is not found, go to step 35. If a high resistance or open is found, repair Black wire as necessary. After repair, go to step 39.
- Inspect Torque Converter Clutch (TCC)/brake switch for proper adjustment. See CRUISE CONTROL RELEASE SWITCH, STOPLIGHT SWITCH & TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH/BRAKE SWITCH under ADJUSTMENTS. If TCC/brake switch does not need adjustment, go to step 24. If TCC/brake switch needs adjustment, adjust as necessary. After repair, go to step 39.
- Inspect cruise control release switch for proper adjustment. See CRUISE CONTROL RELEASE SWITCH, STOPLIGHT SWITCH & TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH/BRAKE SWITCH under ADJUSTMENTS. If cruise control release switch does not need adjustment, go to step 26. If cruise control release switch needs adjustment, adjust as necessary. After repair, go to step 39.
- Repair open or short to ground in Brown wire between cruise control release switch and cruise control module harness connector terminal "D". If repair did not correct concern, go to step 33. If repair corrected concern, go to step 39.
- Repair short to voltage in Brown wire between cruise control release switch and cruise control module harness connector terminal "D". If repair did not correct concern, go to step 33. If repair corrected concern, go to step 39.
- Repair open or high resistance in Light Blue wire between stoplight switch harness connector terminal "B" and cruise control module harness connector terminal "G". See Figure and Figure . If repair did not correct concern, go to step 34. If repair corrected concern, go to step 39.
- Repair open or short to ground in Gray wire between multifunction lever switch harness connector terminal "L" and cruise control module harness connector terminal "A". See Figure and Figure . If repair did not correct concern, go to step 36. If repair corrected concern, go to step 39.
- Disconnect cruise control tester from cruise control module, but leave connected to cruise control module harness connector. If CRUISE LAMP LED remains OFF when cruise control module was disconnected, go to next step. If CRUISE LAMP LED does not remain OFF when cruise control module was disconnected, go to step 35.
- Disconnect PCM 80-pin Red harness connector C2. PCM is located on right side of engine compartment, near rear of wheelwell. Inspect White wire for an open or short to ground between PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 13 and cruise control module harness connector terminal "J". See Figure and Figure . If an open or short to ground is not found, go to step 37. If an open or short to ground is found, repair White wire as necessary. After repair, go to step 39.
- Disconnect multifunction lever switch 11-pin harness connector. Inspect Dark Blue wire for an open or short to ground between multifunction lever switch harness connector terminal "K" and cruise control module harness connector terminal "B". See Figure and Figure . If an open or short to ground is not found, go to step 36. If an open or short to ground is found, repair Dark Blue wire as necessary. After repair, go to step 39.
- Disconnect multifunction lever switch 11-pin harness connector. Inspect Gray/Black wire for an open or short to voltage between multifunction lever switch harness connector terminal "J" and cruise control module harness connector terminal "C". See Figure and Figure . If an open or short to voltage is not found, go to step 36. If an open or short to voltage is found, repair Gray/Black wire as necessary. After repair, go to step 39.
- Disconnect PCM 80-pin Red harness connector C2. PCM is located on right side of engine compartment, near rear of wheelwell. Inspect Dark Green wire for an open or high resistance between PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 37 and cruise control module harness connector terminal "H". See Figure and Figure . If an open or high resistance is not found, go to step 38. If an open or high resistance is found, repair Dark Green wire as necessary. After repair, go to step 39.
- Disconnect PCM 80-pin Red harness connector C2. PCM is located on right side of engine compartment, near rear of wheelwell. Inspect Dark Green/White wire for an open or high resistance between PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 50 and cruise control module harness connector terminal "K". See Figure and Figure . If an open or high resistance is not found, go to step 38. If an open or high resistance is found, repair Dark Green/White wire as necessary. After repair, go to step 39.
- Replace stoplight switch. After repair, go to step 39.
- Replace TCC/brake switch. After repair, go to step 39.
- Replace cruise control module. After repair, go to step 39.
- Replace multifunction lever switch. After repair, go to step 39.
- Replace PCM. Program PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under PROGRAMMING. After repair, go to next step.
- Operate system to verify repair. If cruise control system is not operating properly, repeat test beginning at step 2.
NOTE:
Leave cruise control ON/OFF switch in ON position, until instructed to turn OFF position.
