SERVICE INFORMATION
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
CONDITION/CONCERN
Some technicians may comment that they are unable to successfully add or program a new transmitter(s) to the vehicle. It may be found that both methods of adding a transmitter may be followed in Global Service Information (GSI) but neither method was successful.
RECOMMENDATION/INSTRUCTIONS
If, after verifying the transmitter(s) are brand new and have not been programmed to another BCM, the technician is still unable to program the transmitter(s) to the vehicle, the technician is to double check for any DTCs that may be set in the security system of the car. Often, there is a DTC B0002 set in the vehicle indicating there is an issue with the slip ring circuit in the vehicle. If the slip ring on the ignition lock cylinder is not making good contact with the ignition key, the transmitter(s) cannot be successfully programmed to the vehicle.
In many cases, either the slip ring or the key is worn down from use and will no longer make good contact as the ignition key is being rotated in the ignition lock cylinder. It is also possible that the circuit that connects the BCM to the slip ring has actually become disconnected. To inspect for this issue, remove the upper and lower plastic trim pieces that surround the upper portion of the steering column. This particular parameter can also be monitored in the scan tool under the following pathing: Body / Body Control Module / Data Display / Input & Output menu. Scroll down to the parameter labeled "Slip Ring Enabled" and see if it reads "Yes" and "No" when the key is removed and inserted. After the slip ring is working correctly (and the DTC clears out if one has already set), the transmitters should program correctly.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
