Road Testing

  1. Before road testing, be certain that fluid level is at its proper level. Also make certain the control linkage is set property. During road test, upshift and downshift should be smooth and without slippage. All shifts may vary somewhat from the following shift speed chart due to production tolerances or tire size.
  2. Slippage or engine runaway in any gear usually indicates clutch or band problems. The slipping unit in a particular gear can usually be identified by noting transmission operation in other selector positions and comparing which internal units are applied in those positions.
  3. This process of elimination can be used to detect any unit which slips, and to confirm proper operation of good units. The actual cause of the malfunction usually cannot be determined. Practically any condition can be caused by leaking hydraulic circuits or sticking valves. Therefore, unless an obvious condition exists, DO NOT remove transmission until a hydraulic pressure check has been completed.
