Valve Clearance

  1. Raise and support rear of vehicle. Remove rear wheels. Disconnect heated oxygen sensor lead. It may be necessary to remove hot air blower beforehand.
  2. Push heated oxygen sensor lead and rubber grommet downward through engine paneling on left-hand side. Remove screws from engine side paneling. From below engine, remove engine guard. Remove exhaust system, except for heat exchanger.
  3. Remove engine side paneling. disconnect spark plug leads from upper and lower ignition circuits. Remove engine valve covers. Ensure engine temperature does not exceed 68°F (20°C).
NOTE: If spark plugs are not removed when valves are adjusted, the engine MUST only be rotated at the bottom pulley or at the internal multi-toothed end of alternator shaft. Check torque of alternator shaft nut after valve adjustment has been completed.
  4. Rotate engine until piston for cylinder No. 1 is at top dead center of compression stroke. Ensure distributor rotor is aligned with mark on distributor housing. "Z1" (TDC) mark on crankshaft pulley must be aligned with crankcase seam or locating mark on blower housing. See Fig 1 .
  5. Check valve clearance on cylinder No. 1. Refer to the VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS  . If necessary, loosen and hold lock nut while turning adjustment screw. After adjusting valve, tighten lock nut. Rotate engine another 120 degrees (cylinder No. 6 at TDC).
  6. Adjust valves in firing sequence: 1-6-2-4-3-5. Rotate engine 120 degrees each time to ensure piston for respective cylinder is at top dead center of compression stroke. Marks for TDC of each cylinder are located 120 degrees apart on crankshaft pulley.
