Installing sensor module

  1. Tap out sealing ring on front output shaft on the transmission side with a screwdriver.

  2. Insert sensor module and secure it. Tightening torque 8 Nm (6 ft. lb.)

  3. Insert oil collection pan.

  4. Prepare electric plug connection for sensor module.
    1. 4.1. Engage electric plug connection -2-  on the holder -1-  .
    2. 4.2. Push connector housing -3-  onto the electric plug connection -2-  and engage it.

  5. Position transmission housing so that it is vertical on the mounting bracket.

  6. Shift gearshift lever as far as it will go in direction of travel.

  7. Clean sealing faces on transmission housing flange.
  8. Check that dowel sleeves -1, 2-  are fitted and coat differential housing flange with sealant.

  9. Check that magnet is fitted.

  10. Insert oil guide for front-wheel drive.

  11. Guide pin, M8 T10273  must be screwed into the threaded bore under the dowel sleeves.

  12. Suspend center transmission housing on the workshop crane WE 1188  and install it.
    1. 12.1. Retainer T10014  must be secured to the center transmission housing.
    2. 12.2. Secure VW771/40 from tool set Multi-purpose tool VW 771  to the center transmission housing.
    3. 12.3. Eye-head bolt 3368  must be secured to VW771/40.
    4. 12.4. Retainer T10014  and eye-head bolt 3368  must now be connected to the lifting tackle 2024A  .
    5. 12.5. Lifting tackle 2024A  must be connected to the workshop crane WE 1188  .
    6. 12.6. Raise center transmission housing and lower it into the transmission housing.

  13. Secure center transmission housing with new fastening screws. Initial tightening 8 Nm (6 ft. lb.) Final tightening +120°

  14. Turn connector housing using bit T40228  and engage it.

  15. Install new sealing ring for front output shaft. → 387055 REPLACING SEALING RING FOR FRONT OUTPUT SHAFT 
  16. Fit spur gear -1-  and needle-roller bearing -2-  on the output shaft -3-  .

  17. Insert side shaft -2-  with a new fastening screw -1-  .

  18. Tighten new fastening screw -A-  for side shaft -B-  . Initial tightening 100 Nm (74 ft. lb.) Final tightening +120° +30° 
    1. 18.1. Fit bi-hexagonal socket insert (a/f 21) -C-  with extension -D-  .
    2. 18.2. Counter-hold tool T40217  must be inserted into the side shaft -arrows 1, 2-  and screwed to the center transmission housing.

  19. Install oil guide for drive shaft.

  20. Prepare sealing faces on transmission housing cover and transmission housing.
    1. 20.1. Clean sealing faces with a cleaning cloth and remove all old residual sealant using cleaning agent (00004321045).
    2. 20.2. Make sure that the sealing faces are free of dust and grease and that no more oil can run over them.
  21. Apply a bead of sealant -1-  evenly with a thickness of approx. 5 mm.

    Avoid bore with thin wall thickness -2- on both sides  .

  22. Position transmission housing cover -3-  .
    1. 22.1. Guide pins, M8 T10273 -1-  must be screwed into the threaded bores shown.
    2. 22.2. Sleeve 9884 -2-  must be fitted over the transmission shaft.
    3. 22.3. Fit transmission housing cover -3-  on straight, making sure not to damage the sealing ring -4-  .
    4. 22.4. Guide pins, M8 T10273 -1-  must now be unscrewed.
    5. 22.5. Sleeve 9884 -2-  must be removed.

  23. Secure transmission housing cover.
    1. 23.1. Screw in and tighten screws -1-  . Initial tightening 20 Nm (15 ft. lb.) Final tightening +90° +/-20° 
    2. 23.2. Screw in and tighten screws -2-  . Initial tightening 15 Nm (11 ft. lb.) Final tightening +90° +/-20°
