The in-vehicle temperature sensor is a Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) thermistor installed behind a grill in the instrument panel, on the inboard side of the steering column. A motor driven fan in the sensor draws air through the grill and over the thermistor.

The Automatic Temperature Control Module (ATCM) uses the signal from the in-vehicle temperature sensor for control of the climate control assembly output temperatures, blower speed and air distribution.

The ATCM provides the in-vehicle temperature sensor with a 5v reference voltage and translates the return signal voltage into a temperature. If the in-vehicle temperature sensor develops a fault, the ATCM adopts a default temperature of 20 °C (68 °F).
