Transaxle Disassembly

  1. Remove clutch arm and bearing assembly. Remove shift control housing. Remove rear cover and vehicle speed sensor. Lock transaxle into 2 gears with shift forks. Remove input and output shaft nuts.
  2. Remove washer, reverse cone and reverse synchronizer ring. Remove 5th-reverse fork retaining clip. Retaining clip can be 2 retaining rings or one clip with bridge between 2 rings. All replacement clips are one-piece design.
  3. Remove 5th-reverse shift fork. Remove 5th-reverse synchronizer assembly, 5th synchronizer ring and 5th gear. See Figure and Figure . Remove 5th driven gear with puller, if necessary. If puller is necessary, remove bearing retainer snap ring to allow shaft and gear assembly to raise up enough to permit puller jaws access under gear.
  4. Remove case half bolts. Spread input and output shaft bearing snap rings to allow both bearings to fall below top case half. Use pry bar or large screwdriver in pry slots to separate case halves. Remove top case half. See Fig 1 .
  5. Remove shift rail retaining clip and remove shift rail. Remove 1-2, 3-4 shift fork and 5th-reverse actuator. See Fig 2 and Fig 3 . Remove oil flow tube. Remove reverse shift lever bolts and reverse idler gear shift lever assembly.
  6. Remove reverse idler gear and thrust washer. Remove reverse idler gear shaft. See Figure . Lift input and output shaft assemblies out of bottom case half. Lift differential assembly out of bottom case half. See Fig 4 . Remove case magnet from bottom case half.
