Post-Collision Inspection

In all types of collisions regardless of air bag deployment, visually inspect all the following components and mounting points and replace as required: inflator module, steering wheel, SIR coil assembly, steering column, knee bolster and instrument panel mounting attachments, driver's seat and seat belts, discriminating sensors, arming sensor, DERM, and resistor module.

Inspect SIR coil assembly wiring and steering wheel for any signs of scoring, melting, or damage due to excessive heat. Replace as required. Never use SIR parts from another vehicle. Proper operation of SIR system requires that any repairs to vehicle structure return it to original production configuration.

Sensor replacement policy requires mandatory replacement of sensors in area of accident damage only. Area of accident damage is defined by manufacturer as that area of the vehicle which is crushed, bent, or damaged in other ways. For example, a front-end collision in which the forward portion of the vehicle has contacted another object, sensors on radiator tie bar would require replacement, since that portion of the vehicle was damaged in the accident.

Sensors in the passenger compartment would not require replacement. If DERM sets a code and the diagnostic chart leads to a faulty sensor that was not in the area of accident damage, that sensor should also be replaced.
