INSTRUMENT PANEL CENTER AIR OUTLET ASSEMBLY CLOSES WHEN BLOWER MOTOR FAN IS ON HIGH (REPLACE I/P CENTER AIR OUTLET ASSEMBLY)

1995 Saturns built up to and including SZ160362.

CONDITION

Some owners may comment that their instrument panel center air outlets close when the blower motor fan is on high.

CAUSE

This condition may be caused by excessive clearance in instrument panel center air outlet duct assembly pivot points.

CORRECTION

Replace instrument panel center air outlet duct assembly according to procedures in this bulletin.

PROCEDURES

REMOVAL

  1. Depress center pins inward to release radio/HVAC controller cover push pin fasteners. See Fig 1 .
    NOTE: Do not push center pins through push pin fasteners.
  2. Remove push pin fasteners and pull radio/HVAC controller cover rearward.
  3. Disconnect traction control-fog lamp-rear defog electrical connector if equipped.
  4. Rotate both instrument panel center air outlet assemblies down. See Fig 2 .
  5. Place a small flat blade screwdriver between instrument panel center air outlet assemblies and pry slightly apart to disengage pivot pins.
  6. Remove both instrument panel center air outlet assemblies.
  7. Use a small flat blade screwdriver to disengage lock tabs on both sides of instrument panel center air outlet duct assembly while pulling rearward. See Fig 3 .
  8. Remove instrument panel center air outlet duct assembly.

INSTALLATION

  1. Install new instrument panel center air outlet duct assembly (P/N 21030535) into opening in instrument panel retainer. See Fig 4 . Push in until tabs are flush with sides of instrument panel center air outlet duct.
  2. With the small hole on the instrument panel center outlet assembly facing inward, rotate the instrument panel center air outlet assembly down and snap into instrument panel center air outlet duct assembly. Repeat this procedure for the second instrument panel center outlet assembly.
    NOTE: Small pivot pins are in center of instrument panel center air outlet duct assembly. Large pivot pins are on sides of instrument panel center air outlet duct assembly.
  3. Connect traction control-fog lamp-rear defog electrical connector, if equipped. See Fig 5 .
  4. Install radio/HVAC control cover. Push in at clip locations.
  5. Install push pin fasteners and lock.
