Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Using scan tool, monitor PNP switch display while moving shift selector lever. If lever position matches scan tool display, problem is intermittent. Check PNP switch adjustment. If lever position does not match scan tool display, go to next step.
  2. Inspect PNP switch and shift cable adjustment. Adjust as needed. See appropriate TRANSMISSION SERVICING - A/T article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING.
  3. Disconnect PNP switch 6-pin connector. If scan tool displays INVALID, go to step 6. If scan tool displays OPEN, go to step 4.
  4. Using jumper wire, connect in sequence terminals "A" thru "D" to ground while observing scan tool. Scan tool should change from OPEN to INVALID as each switch terminal is grounded. If scan tool display is correct as described, replace switch. If scan tool display is not correct as described, go to next step.
  5. Identify circuit(s) that did not display INVALID. Using ohmmeter, check continuity of circuit between PNP switch and PCM. Repair as needed. If circuit(s) is okay, replace PCM.
  6. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, check voltage at terminals "A" thru "D" on PNP switch harness connector. If voltage exists on each terminal, replace PCM. If voltage does not exist on individual circuit, repair circuit as needed for open or short to ground. If circuit is okay, replace PCM.
