Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing OBD system check, go to next step.
  2. Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature (closed loop). Using scan tool, command RPM up and down while observing engine speed. If RPM changes, go to next step. If RPM does not change, go to step  4.
  3. Exit scan tool control. Monitor actual engine RPM. If engine RPM is within 100 RPM of desired engine speed, problem is intermittent. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If engine RPM is too low, check accessory drive components or cause of unstable/rough idle. Repair as necessary.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect IAC valve harness connector. Start engine. Using a test light connected to ground, probe each IAC valve harness connector terminals. If test light flashes on all 4 terminals, go to next step. If test light is on steady on some terminals, check for short to voltage in affected circuit. Repair as necessary. If circuit(s) are okay, replace PCM. If test light is not on some terminals, go to step  6
  5. Remove IAC motor from throttle body. Inspect passages. Clean as necessary. If passages are okay, check IAC valve harness connector terminals for tightness. Repair as necessary. If terminals are okay, replace IAC motor.
  6. Check for terminal tightness at connector or short in circuit. Repair as necessary. If circuit or terminals are okay, replace PCM.
