"N" Body (Malibu)
NOTE:
Before performing the following test, check BULMP/BTSI fuse (10-amp) located in underhood junction block. A short to ground in a circuit can cause an open fuse.
- Using test light, jumper between battery power side of BULMP/BTSI fuse (10-amp) and ground. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, repair open in power supply circuit to BULMP/BTSI fuse (10-amp), then go to step 6.
- Disconnect brakelight switch 4-pin connector C2. Connect a fused jumper between brakelight switch 4-pin connector C2 terminals "A" and "B". See Figure. Turn ignition switch to ON position. DO NOT apply brake pedal. Move gearshift lever out of "P" position. If gearshift lever is locked in "P" position, go to next step. If gearshift lever is not locked in "P" position, check brakelight switch adjustment. If brakelight switch adjustment is correct, replace brakelight switch, then go to step 6.
- Check for open circuit between Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch 7-pin connector terminal "C" and brakelight switch 4-pin connector C2 terminal "A". Check for open circuit between brakelight switch 4-pin connector C2 terminal "B" and BTSI solenoid connector terminal "A". See Figure, Figure or Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair as necessary, then go to step 6. If circuits are okay, go to next step.
- Check for open circuit between BTSI solenoid connector terminal "B" and ground (G201), located right side of dash. Check for open in power supply circuit between PNP switch 7-pin connector terminal "B" and underhood junction block Gray connector C1 terminal "F5". See Figure, Figure or Figure . See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair as necessary, then go to step 6. If circuits are okay, go to next step.
- Check BTSI solenoid or related linkage for mechanical binding. Repair as necessary, then go to next step. If linkage and BTSI solenoid are okay, disconnect BTSI solenoid connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using test light, jumper between BTSI solenoid terminals "A" and "B". See Figure. If test light illuminates, replace BTSI solenoid, then go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, replace PNP switch, then go to next step.
- Ensure all components disconnected or removed during testing are reconnected and installed on vehicle. Ensure BTSI system operates correctly. See SHIFT INTERLOCK SOLENOID under DESCRIPTION & OPERATION. If system does not operate correctly, repeat step 1.
