Section 8 (Cruise Control Systems (3.0L)): Description

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Saturn LW300, 2001 Saturn L300, 2000 Saturn LW2, and 2000 Saturn LS2. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Vehicles are equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. Before attempting ANY repairs involving steering column, instrument panel or related components, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.

Cruise control system differs from conventional systems in that there is no cable used to hold throttle lever open and no cruise control module. Electronic throttle control system makes those components unnecessary and simplifies cruise control diagnostics. System failure means one or more of the sensors or switches associated with the cruise control system is not working properly. Such malfunctions will generate DTCs which will facilitate diagnosing and repair of cruise control system.

Cruise control system consists of an Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) sensor, brakelight switch, cruise brake (release) switch, cruise control functional switches, Engine Control Module (ECM), throttle control module and transaxle range switch. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS  .

Cruise control system can be disengaged by using cruise control switch, applying brake pedal or shifting transmission out of DRIVE position. ECM will automatically disengage cruise control system if cruise brake switch is stuck closed while vehicle has cycled 2 times from 0-34 MPH and vehicle speed decreases more than 2.5 MPH per second.
