Clutch Assembly: Removal

  1. Disable air bag system. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINTS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove battery. Position fan control module aside. Disconnect electrical connections from underhood fuse block. Remove underhood fuse block case. Remove battery tray.
  2. Remove A.I.R. tube, and push back toward transaxle. Remove power steering line clips. Loosen pinch bolt from control shaft lever assembly. Remove retaining pin from shift control shaft. Remove control shaft assembly by pulling directly off pivot pins. Disconnect back-up light switch electrical connector, and remove wiring harness.
  3. Remove spring loaded locking pin or plug from hole located on top of transaxle. If spring loaded locking pin is used, remove and discard. If plug is used, remove and reuse. Remove clutch hydraulic fitting from transaxle, and secure fitting to prevent loss of brake fluid.
  4. Remove upper transaxle to engine mounting bolts. Install Engine Support Bar (SA-9105E) and Engine Support Fixture (J-43405). Mark position and remove left transaxle mount bolts. Remove rear transaxle mount bolt and transaxle mount-to-frame bolt.
  5. Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel assemblies. Remove right front lower splash shield. Remove push pin from left front wheel liner. Disconnect and remove rear oxygen sensor. Remove oxygen sensor clamp. Remove exhaust manifold pipe to exhaust manifold nuts. Remove exhaust manifold pipe.
  6. Remove front transaxle mount bolt. Remove remaining rear transaxle mount bolts. Remove rear transaxle mount. Remove A/C line attachment clip. Remove frame-to-shifter link pivot pin clip. Remove steering gear-to-frame assembly bolts, and secure steering gear assembly aside.
  7. NOTE: DO NOT use wedge type tool to separate ball joint. Seal may become damaged.
  8. Remove stabilizer bar links from strut assemblies, and discard nuts. Remove lower ball stud bolt, and separate ball stud from steering knuckle. Remove suspension support assemblies. Remove suspension support nuts from body.
  9. Support frame assembly using powertrain lifting table and Frame Alignment Support Fixture (J-43628). Remove remaining frame-to-body fasteners. Lower frame assembly from vehicle. Remove frame assembly nuts from body. Remove front and rear transaxle mounts.
  10. Drain transaxle fluid. Using a pry bar, remove axle shafts from transaxle. Remove A/C line retaining clips, and drop A/C line down from body. Lower vehicle. Lower drivers side of powertrain using Engine Support Bar Assembly (SA-9105E). Remove left transaxle mount bracket from transaxle.
  11. Raise vehicle. Remove control shaft lever assembly pivot pin bracket from transaxle case. Support transaxle. Remove remaining engine-to-transaxle mount bolts. Separate transaxle from engine, and lower transaxle from vehicle.
  12. Remove pressure plate assembly-to-flywheel bolts. Remove pressure plate and clutch disc.
