End Cover: Removal

WARNING: Make sure vehicle is properly supported and squarely positioned on hoist. To help avoid personal injury, provide additional support to opposite end of vehicle that components will be removed.
CAUTION: On ABS equipped vehicles, outer CV joint has a speed sensor ring. Using incorrect tool or procedure to separate control arm from knuckle can damage the ring, resulting in loss of ABS operation. Do not attempt to separate joint using a wedge type tool because the boot may be damaged.
  1. Raise vehicle on hoist. Remove left front wheel. Remove left wheelhouse splash shield. Drain transaxle fluid.
  2. Remove cotter pin from lower ball joint and discard. Loosen nut and back off until top of nut is even with top of threads. Separate ball joint from steering knuckle using Lower Control Arm Ball Stud Separator (SA9132S) and remove nut.
  3. Remove bolt retaining brake line bracket to inner fender and position brake line to avoid interference. Remove transaxle mount-to-frame fastener. Place a screw type jack stand under transaxle casing (use a block of wood between stand and casing) to unload transaxle lower mount. Remove 2 mount-to-transaxle fasteners. See Fig 1 .
  4. Loosen and back off 2 frame-to-body bolts. See Fig 2 . Do not remove bolts. Raise powertrain enough to remove mount from vehicle. Lower jack and remove end cover bolts.
  5. NOTE: Use care when removing end cover as the tubes can bend easily.
  6. Remove end cover. See Fig 3 .
