Shifter Control Assembly (On-Vehicle): Removal

  1. Disable SIR system. For 2000 models, see DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . For 2001 models, see DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . For 2002 models, see DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
  2. Remove control lever boot assembly. Refer to CONTROL LEVER BOOT ASSEMBLY (ON-VEHICLE)  .
    NOTE: Shifter control assembly to floor pan attachment nuts must be removed for access to cable ends. Attempting to remove cable ends without assembly removal will cause cable damage.
  3. Remove bolt from cable retaining plate and remove plate.
  4. Remove shifter control assembly to floor pan attachment nuts.

  5. Remove plastic cable guide from shifter using a screwdriver.
  6. Disconnect wiring harness clip from shifter control assembly.

  7. Lay shifter on its side to provide access to cable ends.

    IMPORTANT:  Do not pry off cable end with a single screwdriver.

  8. Remove the selector cable from the shifter bell crank. Use two flat blade screwdrivers and a twisting motion to separate the cable end from the bell crank.

  9. Grasp the cable end with long pliers and rotate rod end as shown.
