Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Turn ignition off for 10 seconds. Using scan tool, monitor CMP RESYNC COUNTER while the following: Start engine and slowly accelerate to wide open throttle 5 times. Let engine idle for 30 seconds. If any counts are present, go to next step. If no counts are present, problem is intermittent. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  .
  2. If engine cuts out when count(s) were showing up on scan tool, repair intermittent open in 7X ref. circuit. Check the following:
    • CKP sensor mounting bolt for tightness.
    • Connections on Yellow wire and Purple wire between PCM and CKP sensor.
    • Connections on Red/Black wire between PCM and EI module.
    • Connections on EI module power and ground (Pink wire and Black wire).

    If engine does not cut out when count(s) were showing up on scan tool, check for Electromagnetic interference (EMI) on crankshaft sensor circuit or 7X ref. circuit. Check harness routing to make sure it is away from battery cables and attached to appropriate clips and retainers. Check generator/starter for electrical noise.
