Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Start engine. Using scan tool, command GENERATOR L TERMINAL on and off, while observing GENERATOR F TERMINAL DC. If duty cycle reads zero percent when commanded off and more than 12 percent when commanded on, problem is intermittent. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  . If duty cycle does not read zero percent when commanded off or does not read more than 12 percent when commanded on, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect generator 2-pin harness connector. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using DVOM, measure voltage on Red wire while using scan tool to command GENERATOR L TERMINAL on. If voltage is less than 4 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 4-6 volts, go to step  4 . If voltage is more than 6 volts, repair short to voltage on Red wire between PCM and generator.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector J2. Check continuity between Red wire and ground at generator connector. If continuity exists, repair short to ground in Red wire. If continuity does not exist, check Red wire for open. If continuity does not exist, check Red wire for open. If wire is okay, replace PCM.
  4. Using scan tool, command GENERATOR L TERMINAL off. If voltage is not less than 0.2 volt, replace PCM. If voltage is less than 0.2 volt, ensure battery voltage is present at generator. If battery voltage is present, replace generator.
