Shift Cable: Removal

  1. Disable SIR system. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Remove air cleaner housing and duct assembly. See AIR CLEANER & DUCT ASSEMBLY  .
  2. CAUTION: Do not drag cable boot through bracket hole as boot damage may occur.
  3. Remove small retainers at cable ends. See Fig 1 . Disconnect the cable ends from the shift control housing. Remove large cable to clutch housing retainers. Lift cable out of clutch housing bracket. Remove shifter control assembly. See SHIFTER CONTROL ASSEMBLY  .
  4. NOTE: Carpet is held together by hook-and-loop fasteners.
  5. Separate carpeting at front of dash under shift cables. Remove the retainers, on both sides of the cable pass-through opening, holding the sound deadening material. See Fig 2 .
  6. Roll back the sound deadening material at the front of dash to gain access to the cable pass-through grommet.
  7. NOTE: When removing and installing shift cables, it is helpful to have a second person inside vehicle to guide cables and prevent them from being tangled.
  8. For service replacement shift cables, perform the following steps:
    • Raise and support the vehicle.
    • Remove cable grommet from front of dash by removing the 2 retaining nuts and pushing the grommet and retaining plate into the vehicle. See Fig 3 .
    • Lower vehicle and remove cables.
  9. For production shift cables, perform the following steps:
    • Place a large flat-blade screwdriver against the driver's side of the cable pass-through grommet as shown. See Fig 4 .
    • Push grommet toward passenger side of vehicle and outward to disengage grommet from floor pan.
    • Raise and support the vehicle. Remove cable and cable pass-through grommet from the outside of the vehicle.
