Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing diagnostic system check - engine controls, go to next step.
  2. Connect scan tool. Turn ignition switch to RUN position, engine off. If any other DTCs are set, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no other DTCs are set, go to next step.
  3. Start engine. Allow the engine to idle. Observe the CMP Resync Counter using the scan tool. Does the CMP Resync Counter increment to 14, then reset to 0 continuously? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If no, go to next step.
  4. Observe the Misfire Counter current CYL No. 1 and No. 4 counters with a scan tool. Is cylinder No. 1 and/or No. 4 Misfire Counters counting up? If yes, go to DTC P0300: ENGINE MISFIRE DETECTED . If no, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Disconnect the ICM. Measure the voltage from the CMP signal circuit at the ICM harness connector to a good ground with a DVOM. Is the voltage within 4-6 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  7.
  6. Observe the CMP Resync Counter with a scan tool. Crank engine. Does the CMP Resync Counter count up without resetting to 0? If yes, go to step  8. If no, go to step  10.
  7. Test the CMP signal circuit for a short to ground. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  12. If no, go to step  10.
  8. Test for an intermittent and for a poor connection at the ICM. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  12. If no, go to next step.
  9. Replace ICM. See ELECTRONIC IGNITION MODULE under IGNITION SYSTEMS in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - ION article. After replacing ICM, go to step  12.
  10. Test for an intermittent and for a poor connection at the ECM. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  12. If no, go to next step.
  11. Replace ECM. See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - ION article. Perform ECM relearn procedure. See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE REPROGRAMMING  under PROGRAMMING. After replacing ECM, go to next step.
  12. Using a scan tool, clear the DTCs. Turn ignition switch to OFF position for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records. Does the DTC fail this ignition? If yes, go to step  2. If no, go to next step.
  13. Using a scan tool, observe the CAPTURE INFO. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay at this time.
