Test A: Starter Solenoid Does Not Click: 2003

  1. Perform engine electrical diagnostic system check. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE ELECTRICAL  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition to START position. If theft indicator is flashing, see VEHICLE ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in appropriate ANTI-THEFT SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If theft indicator is not flashing, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition to START position. If starter solenoid clicks, go to TEST B: STARTER SOLENOID CLICKS, ENGINE DOES NOT CRANK  . If starter solenoid does not click, go to next step.
  4. If vehicle is equipped with automatic transmission, go to next step. If vehicle is equipped with manual transmission, go to step  7 .
  5. Disconnect Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch. Connect test lamp between crank voltage circuit of PNP switch harness connector and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Turn ignition to START position. If test lamp lights up, go to next step. If test lamp does not light up, go to step  9 .
NOTE: You must use 10-gauge wire for fused jumper. Any smaller wire will cause too high of resistance and a misdiagnosis will occur.
  6. Connect 15-amp fused jumper wire between crank voltage circuit of PNP switch and starter solenoid crank voltage circuit of PNP switch. Turn ignition to START position. If engine cranks, go to step  12 . If engine does not crank, go to step  10 .
CAUTION: Place transmission in neutral and set parking brake.
  7. Disconnect Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) switch. Connect a test lamp between crank voltage circuit of CPP switch harness connector and ground. Turn ignition to START position. If test lamp lights up, go to next step. If test lamp does not light up, go to step  9 .
NOTE: You must use 10-gauge wire for fused jumper. Any smaller wire will cause too high of resistance and a misdiagnosis will occur.
  8. Connect a 15-amp fused jumper wire between crank voltage circuit of CPP switch and starter solenoid crank voltage circuit of CCP switch. Turn ignition to START position.
  9. Test crank voltage circuit of transmission range switch or CPP switch for high resistance or an open. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If problem was found and repaired, go to step  19 . If no problem was found, go to step  11 .
  10. Test starter solenoid crank voltage circuit for a short, high resistance or an open. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If problem was found and repaired, go to step  19 . If no problem was found, go to step  14 .
  11. Inspect for poor connections at ignition switch. See INTERMITTENT OR POOR CONNECTIONS  under TROUBLE SHOOTING. If problem was found and repaired, go to step  19 . If no problem was found, go to step  15 .
  12. Inspect for poor connections at transmission range switch. See INTERMITTENT OR POOR CONNECTIONS  under TROUBLE SHOOTING. If problem was found and repaired, go to step  19 . If no problem was found, go to step  16 .
  13. Inspect for poor connections at CCP switch. See INTERMITTENT OR POOR CONNECTIONS  under TROUBLE SHOOTING. If problem was found and repaired, go to step  19 . If no problem was found, go to step  17 .
  14. Inspect for poor connections at starter solenoid. See INTERMITTENT OR POOR CONNECTIONS  under TROUBLE SHOOTING. If problem was found and repaired, go to step  19 . If no problem was found, go to step  18 .
  15. Replace ignition switch. See IGNITION SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate STEERING COLUMNS article in STEERING. Go to step  19 .
  16. Replace Park-Neutral Position (PNP) switch. See PARK-NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH (A/T)  under ADJUSTMENTS. Go to step  19 .
  17. Replace Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) switch. See CLUTCH PEDAL POSITION SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to step  19 .
  18. Replace starter motor. See STARTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  19. Recheck starting system. If starter solenoid still does not click, go back to step  2 .
