Test A: Starter Solenoid Does Not Click: 2004

  1. Perform engine electrical diagnostic system check. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE ELECTRICAL  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Go to next step.
  2. Verify that transmission is in Park or Neutral. Turn ignition switch to START position. If engine cranks, see INTERMITTENT OR POOR CONNECTIONS  under TROUBLE SHOOTING. If engine does not crank, go to next step.
  3. If theft indicator is flashing, see VEHICLE ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in appropriate ANTI-THEFT SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If theft indicator is not flashing, go to next step.
  4. If starter solenoid clicks, go to TEST B: STARTER SOLENOID CLICKS, ENGINE DOES NOT CRANK  . If starter solenoid does not click, go to next step.
  5. Disconnect transmission range switch. Connect test lamp between crank voltage circuit of transmission range switch harness connector and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Turn ignition to START position. If test lamp lights up, go to next step. If test lamp does not light up, go to step  7 .
NOTE: You must use 10-gauge wire for fused jumper. Any smaller wire will cause too high of resistance and a misdiagnosis will occur.
  6. Connect 25-amp fused jumper wire between crank voltage circuit of PNP switch and starter solenoid crank voltage circuit of PNP switch. Turn ignition to START position. If engine cranks, go to step  9 . If engine does not crank, go to next step.
  7. Test starter solenoid crank voltage circuit for a short, high resistance or an open. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If problem was found and repaired, go to step  14 . If no problem was found, go to step  10 .
  8. Inspect for poor connections at ignition switch. See INTERMITTENT OR POOR CONNECTIONS  under TROUBLE SHOOTING. If problem was found and repaired, go to step  14 . If no problem was found, go to step  11 .
  9. Inspect for poor connections at transmission range switch or clutch pedal position switch. See INTERMITTENT OR POOR CONNECTIONS  under TROUBLE SHOOTING. If problem was found and repaired, go to step  14 . If no problem was found, go to step  12 .
  10. Inspect for poor connections at the starter solenoid. See INTERMITTENT OR POOR CONNECTIONS  under TROUBLE SHOOTING. If problem was found and repaired, go to step  14 . If no problem was found, go to step  13 .
  11. Replace ignition switch. See IGNITION SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate STEERING COLUMNS - "L" SERIES article in STEERING. Go to step  14 .
  12. Replace and adjust transmission range switch. See PARK-NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH (A/T)  under ADJUSTMENTS. Go to step  14 .
  13. Replace starter motor. See STARTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to next step.
  14. Operate starting system to confirm repairs. If problem is still present, go back to step  3 .
