Output Speed Sensor (2.2L)
The Output Speed Sensor (OSS) is a magnetic inductive pickup sensor, which uses a permanent magnet surrounded by a coil of wire. On vehicles equipped with variable transaxle, OSS is located inside transaxle, under the valve body. On vehicles equipped with manual transaxle, OSS is located externally on left rear of transaxle. See Fig 1 or Fig 2 . As the differential rotates, an AC voltage is induced in the OSS signal circuit. The OSS produces an AC voltage of different amplitude and frequency depending on velocity of the output shaft. The OSS produces signal from evenly spaced notches on the sensor rotor. The OSS produces a readable AC voltage signal when vehicle speed is greater than 3 MPH. The OSS signal is sent to the ECM, which is used determine the RPM from the output shaft.
