Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Saturn Ion Red Line, 2004 Saturn Ion 3, 2004 Saturn Ion 2, and 2004 Saturn Ion 1. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
    NOTE: The new SIR coil assembly will be centered. Improper alignment of the SIR coil assembly may damage the unit, causing an inflatable restraint malfunction.
  1. Place the front wheels in the straight forward position with the steering wheel centered.
  2. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 3 .
  3. Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement (Redline)  or Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement (Except Redline) .
  4. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  5. Remove the steering column covers. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  6. Disconnect the SIR coil harness connector from the SIR coil module assembly.
  7. Disconnect the head lamp/turn signal harness connector from the SIR coil module assembly.
  8. Disconnect the wiper/washer harness connector for the SIR coil module assembly.

  9. Remove the SIR coil assembly screw.
  10. Using a small flat-bladed tool, carefully pry the two retaining tabs away at the base of the SIR coil assembly and slide the SIR coil assembly off the steering column.

  11. Remove the headlamp/turn signal switch screws.
  12. Remove the headlamp/turn signal switch from the SIR coil module assembly.

  13. Remove the wiper washer switch screws.
  14. Remove the wiper washer switch from the SIR coil module assembly.
