Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. CAUTION: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control which could result in personal injury.
  3. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  4. Use a utility stand in order to support the rear of the frame.
  5. Remove the frame rear bolts.
  6. Lower the frame rear to gain clearance.
  7. Place the drain pan under the power steering pump and the power steering gear.
  8. Remove the power steering gear heat shield. Refer to Power Steering Gear Heat Shield Replacement .

  10. Remove the power steering gear hose clip.
  11. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the steering gear.
  12. Raise the rear of the frame.
  13. Install the frame bolts. Fully seat the frame bolts. Do NOT tighten the frame bolts.
  14. Remove the utility stand.
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Diagnosis in Engine Mechanical - 3.5L.

  18. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the pump.
  19. Raise the vehicle.
  20. Remove the power steering hose from the hose retainer.
  21. Remove the power steering pressure hose.
