Inspection Procedure

HINT:

When releasing the parking brake, set the chocks to hold the vehicle for safety.

  1. CHECK BRAKE FLUID 

    Check that the brake fluid level is proper. 

    NG: ADD BRAKE FLUID 

    OK: Go to next step. 

  2. CHECK DTC FOR ABS 

    Are the DTC recorded? (SEE  DTC CHECK/CLEAR   ) 

    NO: Go to step 3 

    YES: REPAIR CIRCUIT INDICATED BY OUTPUT CODE (SEE  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART   ) 

  3. INSPECT BRAKE WARNING LIGHT 

    WHEN USING HAND-HELD TESTER: 

    1. Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
    2. Start the engine.
    3. Select the "BRAKE WARN LIGHT" in the ACTIVE TEST and operate the brake warning light by the hand-held tester.

    4. Check that "ON" and "OFF" of the brake warning light are indicated on the combination meter when using the hand-held tester.
      • OK: 
      • The brake warning light turns on or off in accordance with the hand-held tester. 

    WHEN NOT USING HAND-HELD TESTER: 

    1. Turn the ignition switch off and disconnect the connector from the skid control ECU.
    2. Ground terminal BRL of the skid control ECU.
    3. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
    4. Check the BRAKE warning light.

      OK: 

      BRAKE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATION CONDITION

      BRL - GND Condition Illumination Condition
      Connecting OFF
      Disconnecting ON

    NG: Go to step 4 

    OK: REPLACE BRAKE ACTUATOR ASSY (SEE  REPLACEMENT  ) 

  4. INSPECT PARKING BRAKE SWITCH ASSY 
    1. Remove the parking brake switch assy connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table shown in PARKING BRAKE SWITCH ASSY SPECIFIED CONDITIONS  .

      STANDARD: 

      PARKING BRAKE SWITCH ASSY SPECIFIED CONDITIONS

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      P6-1 - Ground part Released Below 1 Ω
      P6-1 - Ground part Pushed in 10 kΩ or higher

    NG: INSPECT COMBINATION METER ASSY 

    OK: Go to next step. 

  5. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (PARKING BRAKE SWITCH ASSY - SKID CONTROL ECU) 
    1. Disconnect the skid control ECU and parking brake switch assy connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table shown in PARKING BRAKE SWITCH ASSY - SKID CONTROL ECU SPECIFIED CONDITIONS  .

      STANDARD: 

      PARKING BRAKE SWITCH ASSY - SKID CONTROL ECU SPECIFIED CONDITIONS

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      S1-18 (PKB) - P6-1 (PKB) Below 1 Ω
      S1-18 (PKB) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step. 

  6. INSPECT BRAKE FLUID LEVEL WARNING SWITCH 
    1. Remove the reservoir tank cap and strainer.
    2. Disconnect the brake fluid level warning switch connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table shown in BRAKE FLUID LEVEL WARNING SWITCH SPECIFIED CONDITIONS  .

      STANDARD: 

      BRAKE FLUID LEVEL WARNING SWITCH SPECIFIED CONDITIONS

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      (B2-1) - (B2-2) Float UP 10 kΩ or higher
      (B2-1) - (B2-2) Float DOWN Below 1 Ω

    NG: REPLACE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER RESERVOIR SUB-ASSY 

    OK: Go to next step. 

  7. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (BRAKE FLUID LEVEL WARNING SWITCH - COMBINATION METER) 
    1. Disconnect the combination meter connector and the brake fluid level warning switch connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table shown in COMBINATION METER SPECIFIED CONDITIONS  .

      STANDARD: 

      COMBINATION METER SPECIFIED CONDITIONS

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      C6-12 - B2-1 Below 1 Ω
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table shown in BRAKE FLUID LEVEL WARNING SWITCH SPECIFIED CONDITIONS  .

      STANDARD: 

      BRAKE FLUID LEVEL WARNING SWITCH SPECIFIED CONDITIONS

      C6-12 - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step. 

  8. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (SKID CONTROL ECU - COMBINATION METER) 
    1. Disconnect the skid control ECU connector and combination meter connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table shown in SKID CONTROL ECU SPECIFIED CONDITIONS  .

      STANDARD: 

      SKID CONTROL ECU SPECIFIED CONDITIONS

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      S1-32 (BRL) - C6-10 Below 1 Ω
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table shown in COMBINATION METER SPECIFIED CONDITIONS  .

      STANDARD: 

      COMBINATION METER SPECIFIED CONDITIONS

      S1-32 (BRL) - Body ground 10 kΩ or higher

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step. 

  9. INSPECT COMBINATION METER ASSY 
    1. Check combination meter assy (SEE COMBINATION METER ).

    NG: CHECK COMBINATION METER ASSY (SEE  HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING  ) 

    OK: REPLACE BRAKE ACTUATOR ASSY (SEE  REPLACEMENT  )
