Inspection Procedure

HINT:

Hand-held tester: 

  1. READ VALUE USING HAND-HELD TESTER (STARTER SIGNAL) 
    1. Connect a hand-held tester to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester ON.
    3. On the tester, select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DATA LIST / ALL / STARTER SIG.
    4. Check the value displayed on the tester when the ignition switch is turned to the ON and START positions.

      OK: 

      IGNITION SWITCH POSITIONS

      Ignition Switch Positions ON START
      STARTER SIG OFF ON
    1. OK: REPLACE ECM (See  REPLACEMENT  ) 
    2. NG: Go to next step. 
  2. INSPECT PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH OR CLUTCH START SWITCH 
    1. Inspect the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch. (For A/T models)
      1. Disconnect the A3 PNP switch connector.
      2. Check the resistance when the transmission gear selector lever is moved to each position.

        Standard: 

        PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH OR CLUTCH START SWITCH

        Gear Selector Lever Positions Tester Connections Specified Conditions
        P 1 - 3, 6 - 9 Below 1 Ω
        R 2 - 3 Below 1 Ω
        N 3 - 5, 6 - 9 Below 1 Ω
        D 3 - 7 Below 1 Ω
        2 3 - 4 Below 1 Ω
        L 3 - 8 Below 1 Ω

      3. Reconnect the PNP switch connector.
    2. Inspect the clutch start switch. (For M/T models)
      1. Disconnect the C5 clutch start switch connector.
      2. Check the resistance when the clutch start switch is ON and OFF.

        Standard: 

        PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH OR CLUTCH START SWITCH

        Ignition Switch Positions Tester Connections Specified Conditions
        ON (pushed) 1 - 2 Below 1 Ω
        OFF (free) 1 - 2 10 kΩ or higher

      3. Reconnect the clutch start switch connector.
    1. NG: REPLACE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH OR CLUTCH START SWITCH (GO TO STEP 3 AFTER REPLACEMENT) 
    2. OK: Go to next step. 
  3. READ VALUE USING HAND-HELD TESTER (STARTER SIGNAL) 
    1. Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester ON.
    3. On the tester, select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DATA LIST / ALL / STARTER SIG.
    4. Check the value displayed on the tester when the ignition switch is turned to the ON and START positions.

      OK: 

      IGNITION SWITCH POSITIONS

      Ignition Switch Positions ON START
      STARTER SIG OFF ON
    1. OK: SYSTEM OK 
    2. NG: Go to next step 
  4. INSPECT IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSY 
    1. Disconnect the I10 ignition switch connector.
    2. Check the resistance.
      IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSY

      Switch Position Tester Connection Specified Condition
      LOCK All Terminals 10 kΩ or higher
      ACC 1-3 Below 1 Ω
      ON 1-2, 1-3, 2-3, 5-6 Below 1 Ω
      START 1-2, 4-5, 4-6, 5-6 Below 1 Ω

    3. Reconnect the ignition switch connector.
    1. NG: REPLACE IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSY (GO TO STEP 5 AFTER REPLACEMENT 
    2. OK: Go to next step. 
  5. READ VALUE USING HAND-HELD TESTER(STARTER SIGNAL) 
    1. Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester ON.
    3. On the tester, select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DATA LIST / ALL / STARTER SIG.
    4. Check the value displayed on the tester when the ignition switch is turned to the ON and START positions.

      Result: 

      IGNITION SWITCH POSITIONS

      Ignition Switch Positions ON START
      STARTER SIG OFF ON
    1. OK: SYSTEM OK 
    2. NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

OBD II scan tool (excluding the hand-held tester): 

  1. INSPECT ECM (STA VOLTAGE) 
    1. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    2. Measure the voltage between the terminals of the E6 ECM connector.

      Standard: 

      ECM (STA VOLTAGE)

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      STA (E6-9) - E1 (E6-7) 0 V
    3. Measure the voltage between the terminals of the E6 ECM connector when the engine is cranked.

      Standard: 

      ECM (STA VOLTAGE)

      Tester Connections Specified Condition
      STA (E6-9) - E1 (E6-7) 5.5 V or more

    1. OK: REPLACE ECM (See  REPLACEMENT  ) 
    2. NG: Go to next step. 
  2. INSPECT PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH OR CLUTCH START SWITCH 
    1. Inspect the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch. (For A/T models)
      1. Disconnect the A3 PNP switch connector.
      2. Check the resistance when the transmission gear selector lever is moved to each position.

        Standard: 

        PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH OR CLUTCH START SWITCH

        P 1 - 3, 6 - 9 Below 1 Ω
        R 2 - 3 Below 1 Ω
        N 3 - 5, 6 - 9 Below 1 Ω
        D 3 - 7 Below 1 Ω
        2 3-4 Below 1 Ω
        L 3 - 8 Below 1 Ω

      3. Reconnect the PNP switch connector
    2. Inspect the clutch start switch. (For M/T models)
      1. Disconnect the C5 clutch start switch connector.
      2. Check the resistance when the clutch start switch is ON and OFF.

        Standard: 

        PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH OR CLUTCH START SWITCH

        ON (pushed) 1 - 2 Below 1 Ω
        OFF (free) 1 - 2 10 kΩ or higher

      3. Reconnect the clutch start switch connector.
    1. NG: REPLACE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH OR CLUTCH START SWITCH (GO TO STEP 3 AFTER REPLACEMENT) 
    2. OK: Go to next step. 
  3. INSPECT ECM (STA VOLTAGE) 
    1. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    2. Measure the voltage between the terminals of the E6 ECM connector.

      Standard: 

      ECM (STA VOLTAGE)

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      STA (E6-9) - E1 (E6-7) 0V

    3. Measure the voltage between the terminals of the E6 ECM connector when the engine is cranked.

      Standard: 

      TESTER CONNECTIONS RESISTANCE SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      STA (E6-9) - E1 (E6-7) 5.5 V or more
    1. OK: SYSTEM OK 
    2. NG: Go to next step 
  4. INSPECT IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSY 
    1. Disconnect the I10 ignition switch connector.
    2. Check the resistance.
      IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSY

      Ignition Switch Positions Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      LOCK All Terminals 10 kΩ or higher
      ACC 1-3 Below 1 Ω
      ON 1-2, 1-3, 2-3, 5-6 Below 1 Ω
      START 1-2, 4-5, 4-6, 5-6 Below 1 Ω

    3. Reconnect the ignition switch connector.
    1. NG: REPLACE IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSY (GO TO STEP 5 AFTER REPLACEMENT) 
    2. OK: Go to next step. 
  5. INSPECT ECM (STA VOLTAGE) 
    1. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    2. Measure the voltage between the terminals of the E6 ECM connector.

      Standard: 

      ECM (STA VOLTAGE) (E6 ECM CONNECTOR)

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      STA (E6-9) - E1 (E6-7) 0V
    3. Measure the voltage between the terminals of the E6 ECM connector when the engine is cranked.

      Standard: 

      ECM (STA VOLTAGE) (E6 ECM CONNECTOR WHEN ENGINE IS CRANKED)

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      STA (E6-9) - E1 (E6-7) 5.5 V or more

    1. OK: SYSTEM OK 
    2. NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
