Steering Gear: Reassembly
- Apply Valiant (M2) grease to rack teeth, sliding portion of rack shaft, sleeve insertion hole, dust seal, and dust cover hole. Press dust seal into steering gear.
- Maximum distance between steering gear and dust seal should be .08" (2.0 mm). Apply grease to dust cover and install cover on input shaft.NOTE: Ensure lip of dust cover comes into contact with housing end distance of 0-.02" (0-.5 mm). If dust cover is installed too far on input shaft, steering wheel will not turn smoothly.
- Apply grease to sliding surface of sleeve and spring seat. Insert sleeve into pinion housing. Insert spring into sleeve screw. Pack grease inside screw, and install screw.
- Adjust backlash of rack and pinion. See ADJUSTMENTS in this article. Install new lock washer on threaded portion of rack end. Align cut portion of rack and nail of washer. Install and tighten ball joint using Wrench (925700000 ) and Spanner (926230000 ).
- Remove steering gear from vice and Stand (926200000 ). Bend lock washer toward ball joint surface. Install boot clips and boot unto steering gear while holding boot flange.
- After boot is installed, fold back boot flange so large clip cannot be seen. If tie rod end was removed, screw in lock nut and tie rod end unto threaded portion of tie rod. Tighten lock nut.
