Steering Rack: Installation

  1. Secure rack housing assembly in vise using Stand (926200000 ). DO NOT secure rack assembly in a vise using pads (aluminum, brass, etc.).
  2. Apply grease to teeth of rack shaft. Position Cover (926390000 ) over toothed portion of rack shaft. Remove excess grease. Check air passage hole for clogging. Remove grease from hole (if necessary).
  3. Apply Dexron ATF to cover and piston ring. Insert rack shaft into rack housing from cylinder side. Remove cover after it has passed completely through oil seal.
  4. Install Guide (926400000 ) over end of rack shaft. Apply Dexron ATF to rack bushing. Install rack bushing, being careful not to damage "O" ring and oil seal.
  5. Insert rack stopper into rack housing. Install rack stopper circlip using wrench. Rotate wrench another 90-180 degrees after circlip is installed. Install mounting rubber onto rack housing.
