Reference: Engine Performance

Bulletin No.: 11-28-87

Date: October 22, 1987

TOOLS AND MATERIALS REQUIRED

  1. 3/8" Drive Ratchet
  2. #499990110 Oxygen Sensor Socket
  3. Spray Penetrant (WD-40, CRC5-56, Kroil, etc.)
  4. Anti-Seize Compound (Never Seize, Jet-Lube #SS-30, etc.)
  5. Thread File

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

  1. Disconnect oxygen sensor harness and remove exhaust pipe from vehicle, protect hands - high temperature. Before attempting oxygen sensor removal, allow front exhaust pipe to cool (should be cool to touch).
  2. Spray base of oxygen sensor with penetrating oil, and allow to stand for one (1) minute or more.
  3. Using special tool (#499990110), see Fig 1 , and 3/8" ratchet, tighten (rotate clockwise) oxygen sensor until you feel the ratchet move slightly. This will help loosen carbon which may surround the threads that protrude past the threaded inlet of the catalytic converter.
