Differential Assembly: Disassembly

  1. Place final drive housing on Work Stand (499937000). Remove bolts attaching torque converter housing and separate torque converter housing. Remove governor cover and pull out governor assembly. Remove attaching bolts and pull out governor sleeve. Remove attaching bolts and lift out parking actuator assembly.
  2. Remove bolts attaching reduction gear oil seal holders. Remove axle drive shaft snap rings from inside differential assembly. See Figure. Wrap vinyl tape over axle shaft splines to protect oil seals. Remove lock plates and remove axle shaft oil seal holders and axle shafts as an assembly. Remove oil level gauge. Move differential assembly to one side and lift out of housing.
  3. Install Shaft (398653600) on reduction drive gear and engage it with Holder (398781600). Remove drive pinion lock nut with Socket (499987100). See Figure. Remove final drive housing from stand and press out drive pinion, paying close attention to reduction drive gear end.
  4. Press out reduction driven gear and bearing retainer as an assembly. Remove snap ring from end of speedometer shaft, and detach driven gear and steel ball. Remove snap ring from speedometer shaft. Remove reduction drive gear and stator shaft.
