WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Subaru Outback and 2001 Subaru Legacy. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . After repairs are complete, check AIR BAG warning light to verify system is functioning correctly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
- Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Remove instrument panel lower cover and glove box. Disconnect lower clockspring connectors AB3 and AB8 and passenger-side air bag module connectors AB9 and AB10. See Figure. Disconnect air bag control module connector AB6. Connect connector AB6 to test harness "I2" (98299FC041), connector 1I. See Figure. Connect negative battery cable and turn ignition on (with engine off). Measure voltage between ground and test harness "I2", connector 2I, terminal No. 3. If voltage is 10 volts or less, go to next step. If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace air bag control module and go to step 5. See CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Turn ignition off and disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least 20 seconds. Disconnect connectors AB1 and B31. See Figure. Connect test harness "A" (98299PAF000) connector 2A to connector AB1. See Figure. Measure resistance between test harness "I2", connector 2I terminal No. 3 and test harness "A", connector 5A, terminal No. 9. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 ohms or more, replace air bag main wiring harness and go to step 5.
- Measure resistance between ground and test harness "A", connector 5A, terminal No. 9. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "I2", connector 2I, terminal No. 3. If resistance is more than one megohm in one or both circuits, go to next step. If resistance is less than one megohm in both circuits, replace air bag wiring harness and go to step 5.
- Turn ignition switch off and disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least 20 seconds. Remove and inspect fuse No. 11 located in joint fuse block. See Fig 1. If fuse is blown, replace fuse and go to next step. If fuse is not blown or fuse blows after being replaced, repair body wiring harness and go next step.
- Turn ignition off and disconnect negative battery terminal. Reconnect system components and activate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Clear air bag system codes. See CLEARING CODES under DIAGNOSTICS. Check for normal air bag system operation. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
