WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Subaru Outback and 2001 Subaru Legacy. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . After repairs are complete, check AIR BAG warning light to verify system is functioning correctly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
  1. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Disconnect connector AB26 from right-side pretensioner. See Figure. Disconnect connectors AB24 and AB25. Disconnect air bag control module connector AB18. Connect connector AB18 to test harness "I2", connector 1I. See Figure. Disconnect connector AB28 from right side impact air bag sensor. Connect connector AB28 to test harness "G", connector 1G. See Figure. Measure resistance between test harness "I2", connector 3I, terminal No. 17 and test harness "G", connector 3G, terminal No. 2. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 ohms or more, replace right side impact air bag harness and go to step  9.
  2. Measure resistance between test harness "I2", connector 3I, terminal No. 19 and test harness "G", connector 3G, terminal No. 5. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 ohms or more, replace right side impact air bag harness and go to step  9.
  3. Measure resistance between test harness "I2", connector 3I, terminal No. 18 and test harness "G", connector 3G, terminal No. 1. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 ohms or more, replace right side impact air bag harness and go to step  9.
  4. Measure resistance between test harness "I2", connector 3I, terminal No. 20 and test harness "G", connector 3G, terminal No. 4. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 ohms or more, replace right side impact air bag harness and go to step  9.
  5. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "I2", connector 3I, terminal No. 18. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is less than one megohm, replace right side impact air bag harness and go to step  9.
  6. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "I2", connector 3I, terminal No. 20. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is less than one megohm, replace right side impact air bag harness and go to step  9.
  7. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "I2", connector 3I, terminal No. 17. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is less than one megohm, replace right side impact air bag harness and go to step  9.
  8. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "I2", connector 3I, terminal No. 19. If resistance is more than one megohm, replace right side impact air bag sensor and go to next step. If resistance is less than one megohm, replace right side impact air bag harness and go to next step.
  9. Turn ignition off and disconnect negative battery terminal. Reconnect system components and activate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Clear air bag system codes. See CLEARING CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. Check for normal air bag system operation. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
