WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Subaru Outback and 2001 Subaru Legacy. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . After repairs are complete, check AIR BAG warning light to verify system is functioning correctly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
  1. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Disconnect connector AB21 from left-side pretensioner. See Figure. Connect connector AB21 to test harness "F" (98299FC010), connector 1F. See Figure. Connect air bag resistor (98299PA040) to test harness "F", connector 3F. Connect negative battery terminal and turn ignition on (with engine off). If AIR BAG warning light does not turn off after about 7 seconds or turns back on within 30 seconds, go to next step. If AIR BAG warning light goes off after about 7 seconds and remains off for more than 30 seconds, replace left-side seat belt with pretensioner and go to step  4. See SEAT BELT PRETENSIONER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  2. Turn ignition off and disconnect negative battery terminal. Wait at least 20 seconds. Remove air bag resistor from test harness "F". Disconnect connectors AB19 and AB20. Disconnect air bag control module connector AB17 and AB18. Connect connector AB17 to test harness "I2" (98299FC041), connector 1I. See Figure. Reconnect negative battery terminal and turn ignition on (with engine off). Measure voltage between ground and test harness "I2", connector 3I, terminal No. 11. If voltage is less than one volt, go to next step. If voltage is more than one volt, replace left side impact air bag wiring harness and go to step  4.
  3. Measure voltage between ground and test harness "I2", connector 3I, terminal No. 13. If voltage is less than one volt, replace air bag control module and go to next step. See CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If voltage is more than one volt, replace left side impact air bag wiring harness and go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition off and disconnect negative battery terminal. Reconnect system components and activate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Clear air bag system codes. See CLEARING CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. Check for normal air bag system operation. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
