WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Subaru Outback and 2001 Subaru Legacy. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . After repairs are complete, check AIR BAG warning light to verify system is functioning correctly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
- Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Remove instrument panel lower cover and glove box. Disconnect passenger-side air bag module connectors AB9 and AB10. See Figure. Connect connector 1K in test harness "K" (part number not available) to connector AB9. See Figure. Connect two air bag resistors (98299PA040) to connectors 3K and 4K in test harness "K". Connect negative battery cable and turn ignition on. If AIR BAG warning light works properly, replace passenger-side air bag module and go to step 6. See PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If AIR BAG warning light does not operate properly, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 20 seconds. Remove two air bag resistors from connectors 3K and 4K in test harness "K". Remove driver-side instrument panel and disconnect driver-side air bag module connectors AB3 from AB8. Disconnect air bag control module connector AB6 from control module and connect to test harness "I2" (98299FC041), connector 2I. See Figure. Measure resistance between test harness "I2" connector 6I terminal No. 2 and test harness "K" connector 4K terminal No. 3. Measure resistance between test harness "I2" connector 6I terminal No. 2 and test harness "K" connector 4K terminal No. 3. If resistance is less than 10 ohms in both circuits, go to next step. If resistance is 10 ohms or more in either circuit, replace air bag main harness and go to step 6. If voltage is one volt or more, replace air bag system wiring harness and go to next step.
- Measure resistance between test harness "I2" connector 2I terminal No. 4 and connector 6I terminal No. 2. If resistance is more one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is less than one megohm, replace air bag main harness. Go to step 6. Turn ignition off and disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least 20 seconds. Reconnect system components and activate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Clear air bag system codes. See CLEARING CODES under DIAGNOSTICS. Check for normal air bag system operation. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
- Measure resistance between ground and test harness "I2" connector 6I terminal No. 2. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is less than one megohm, replace air bag main harness. Go to step 6.
- Measure resistance between ground and test harness "I2" connector 6I terminal No. 4. If resistance is more than one megohm, replace air bag control module and go to next step. See CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is less than one megohm, replace air bag main harness. Go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and disconnect negative battery terminal. Reconnect system components and activate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Clear air bag system codes. See CLEARING CODES under DIAGNOSTICS. Check for normal air bag system operation. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
